Belgium is a small but interesting country. If you visited the beautifull cities like Brugge and Gent i have some new places for you to explore.
We made a 5 day trip to Belgium, first two days Dinant and the last two days Liege (Luik). This is the French speaking are of Belgium. Go by car or rent a car, this is the most easy way to visit this area.
The birth place of Aldolphe Sax is a beautiful place located on the river Meuse (Maas). It’s a small town but enough to do and see in 48 hours. When you arrive you will first see the rock that characterizes Dinant. At the foot of a rock, the collegiate church ‘Onze-Lieve-Vrouwkerk' of Dinant proudly looks out over the Meuse. With its spherical bell tower it is recognizable from afar. In 1228, a loose boulder almost completely destroyed the church. Later, the church suffered heavily from flooding, fire, looting and two world wars. The church was rebuilt in 1855 as we see it in the picture.
On top of rock you will see the Citadel. It’s not to miss! It is accessible by cable car or via the largest staircase in Belgium with 408 steps. Good workout! In the Citadel you can visit a historical and weapon museum. When you go up you also can enjoy a great view of the Meuse river. The first building on that location on the rock dates back to 1051! Lots of historian events took place here, most of the surrounding countries were fighting there, you will find out all about it in the museum.
Enough choice in restaurants and cozy terraces in Dinant. You can also gamble in the casino. What's even better is a beer tasting at Maison Leffe. Maison Leffe is located in a unique convent. Authentic. Stylishly transformed into hotel and restaurant "La Merveilleuse". Leffe was always brewed in the Abbey of Leffe but there is no possibility for viewing and tasting.
If you are more adventurous you can visit the caves of Han at half an hour's drive from Dinant. In the caves and the domain of Han you will find wildlife and a mysterious subterranean world. Be enchanted by the magical cave of Han and go hiking in the Wildpark. It is an unforgettable experience! The caves of Han from a system of subterranean caves in Han-sur-Lesse near Rochefort, located between the river Lesse in the Belgian Ardennes. The whole is known as one of the largest cave complexes in Europe.
Also a must see in Dinant is the rock Bayard, a rock with the shape of a huge menhir that is just separate from the rock wall. Only one lane of the road along the Meuse runs between Bayard and the mountain side, the other direction is around the 'menhir'. Nice to drive through.
Do you want more adventure and do you have no fear of heights? Then go to Dinant Adventure and walk at high altitude over the floating bridges, make a free fall with the zipline or the XL swing, a huge high swing. Get out of your comfort zone and just jump!
Next blog I will write about Liege.
