Travels for me are very joyful but for some people it can be really stressful. The idea to pack, what to bring, not knowing where to go exactly, afraid of flying and all things like that can make it a stressful event. Here some tips to keep relaxed.
Check in at home
When you book your ticket, check in what it's possible to do the check in at home and write it in your agenda. Mostly its 24 or 48 hours before. Also write down the amount of luggage you are allowed to bring. Send a copy of the travel itinerary to you travel buddies or family.
Make a packing list
Find one on the internet, personalize it and print it. Do this a few weeks before so if you need to buy some stuff for you trip you have enough time to do it. There are also lots of packing list apps. So check your app store and check which one fits you best.
Prepare and plan!
Buy a travel guide or rent one at the library, read about your destination. Talk to your travel buddies about your and their expectations. What do you all want to do? Sometimes it can be handy to book tickets upfront and it can also save you a lot of money! For example while going to London and you want to visit the London Eye. Book your tickets up front, it saves you about 5 pounds pp and also you don't have to wait in line to buy your tickets. Download the tube map on your smart phone or print one from the internet. Make an appointment with your travel buddies the phones go off in the night so no one is bothered by other ones phones going off in the night.
Pack in time
Do not wait till the last hour to pack your suitcase or backpack. Start a few days up front to put some stuff you can not forget on a stack. If you pack the way like this the chance you pack to little or way too much is so much smaller. Also, check the amount of luggage you are allowed to bring if you fly. It's a waste of money if you have to pay because you like 10 euro's per kilo extra. That money is better to spend on your destination.
Bring some food for during traveling, you never know when you get some or are able to buy some. For drinks it's not always possible when you fly but mostly after customs I buy a bottle of water, cause you never know. Better to have it than to be hungry or thirsty right. And also if you bring the food yourself you have more (healthy) choice.
It's ok to relax and do nothing
Don't plan your trip too full. It's OK to do nothing and relax, bring an (e-)book and read. Go to the beach and work your tan of just sit on a bench and watch and just enjoy the environment. Talk to some locals, they always can give you tips what to do or where to eat which are not extremely touristic.
Send yourself a scan of your passport and visa by e-mail. You never think of losing you travel documents but if you do its very convenient you have a copy.
Leave in time and pack your hand luggage smart
Make sure you are at the airport at least 2,5 hours before! Better safe than sorry. Going through customs can take a lot of time these days. I always check what I am wearing. Flat shoes, no belt or too much stuff you need to take off at customs. And also in your hand luggage have your liquids and wires on top so you can remove them from your hand luggage quickly and don't have to search for it.
